Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim

Former Chair United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)

Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim is a visionary environmental activist from the Mbororo pastoralist community in Chad. From the age of 12, she has been campaigning for the rights of indigenous peoples and the protection of nature by founding the Association of Fulani Women and Indigenous Peoples of Chad (AFPAT). As regional representative for the Congo Basin within the Indigenous Peoples’ Co-ordinating Committee for Africa (IPACC), she works actively to protect the tropical forests of Central Africa and defend the rights of local and indigenous communities in the region.

An international leader in climate policy, she co-chaired the International Indigenous Peoples’ Forum on Climate Change and serves as an Advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the United Nations. Hindou bridges the gap between ancestral knowledge and international science, advocating for the integration of traditional knowledge into the preservation of ecosystems and the fight against climate change. Her work has been recognised with numerous awards, including the Rolex Award for Enterprise and inclusion in the BBC’s and TIME 100’s lists.
