Rio Synergies in Action
Implementing climate commitments through inclusive land use planning and finance
The three Rio Conventions (UNFCCC, CBD, UNCCD) address challenges that are closely linked in terms of subject matter, but are often dealt with separately in political and financial terms. Based on the results of the new country case study by the Economics of Land Degradation Initiative (ELD) on Rio synergies in Mongolia, this side event presents policy and investment approaches that can be used to jointly address climate action, climate adaptation, biodiversity conservation, combating land degradation and nutrition security. A new analytical approach – based on the principles of the FAO’s Integrated Land Use Planning (ILUP) – which incorporates various levels of planning and implementation and offers starting points for sustainable financing solutions for the synergistic implementation of the Rio Conventions.
The event highlights Germany’s role as an advocate for the coherent implementation of the Rio Conventions in the context of UNFCCC COP31 and the 2026 UN Water Conference. It is aimed at high-level government representatives, research institutions, donor organisations, civil society and private sector stakeholders.
